Descendant

History extends beyond what has been recorded. For many decades, the people who live in Mobile, Alabama's Africatown have exchanged tales about their ancestry. Their village was established by ancestors who were transported as slaves in 1860 on the Clotilda, the final known and illegal slave ship. Upon landing, the ship was purposefully scuttled, but its memories and legacy survived. Now, the town has a concrete connection to its forebears and proof of a past that many people have worked to conceal thanks to the long-awaited discovery of the Clotilda's bones.
