A senior Oxford don on vacation alone in the Alps encounters American Caroline and her companion Elinor, the growing Irish-American girl she adopted many years ago. Both Elinor and Ashby are drawn to Ashby when he discovers how much he enjoys their company. Even after he returns to Oxford, he is surprised when they show up without warning.
