The Reluctant Astronaut
Roy Fleming, played by Don Knotts, is a small-town kiddie-ride operator who is deathly scared of heights. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after learning that his father has enrolled him in the space program, only to discover that his position is a janitor, not an astronaut, when he arrives. Roy manages to maintain an illusion of being an astronaut to his family and friends, in order to live up to his controlling father's expectations. Roy is given the opportunity to confront his concerns when NASA plans to send a layperson into space to verify the quality of a new autonomous spaceship.
