West Point grad lieutenant Jeff Knight meets with cynicism when shooting command of sergeant Michael McNamara's tour specialists platoon in a Vietnamese trench camp. Unlike Jeff adventures the manual doesn't allow coping with all realities, takes charge and gets hurt. He yields, now fully respect by men and superiors. Besides the Viet Cong, the platoon wrestles with all the overburdened villagers, which the G.I.'s officially protect, but also fear as some collaborate using themcovertly with the Cong, either way subject to bloody reprisals.
