The Seen and Unseen

Tantra is inseparable from Tantri. Tantri always gets the whites and Tantra always gets the yolks when they steal eggs from the family's sacrificial gift. The yolk, as well as Tantra, vanishes one day. Tantri begins to slide into wonderful parallel worlds, approaching the inevitable farewell through costumes, body paint, and dance, while her brother is seriously ill and in hospital. Tantri's mother washes the paint off her face at one point, as if tenderly to dispel the idea that things can stay the same. Andini tells the story of a ten-year-old girl dealing with parting and sadness in protracted dream sequences set against the backdrop of the Balinese philosophy of sekala–the seen–and niskala–the unseen.
